Stage 8 Mâcon - Saint-Étienne 199 km

13 July 2019

Today another challenge from fibre from Hilltop Cloud – spin from a braid. Katie, from Hilltop Cloud has dyed a special Tour de Fleece 2019 colourway – Pay de Galles. Its inspiration; a celebration of Wales and the first Welsh winner of the Tour de France, Geraint Thomas. A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to see Thomas ride in the Route du Sud, as a stage came through our village.

This is only the second braid that I’ve spun. The first, I did with no fibre preparation and no idea of what I was doing. This time, I’ve done a little more research and have a little more idea (but not much!).

I decided to split the length in two and then split the two halves into thinner pieces. The aim is to produce a 2-ply yarn. I’m marking each piece to make sure I spin each bobbin in the same order. The fibre is a mix of Welsh Cambrian and Blue-faced Leicester and is beautiful to spin. I could have spent all afternoon watching le Tour on the TV while gently spinning, but I want this to last for at least the next few stages.
